So far this year we have been kept busy in the Careers and Gateway Department.
For our year-long courses, we have had nine students on the Primary Industries course, learning about a variety of farming aspects, and five students traveling through to Wintec one day a week working through their Trades Programme.
We have had 22 students out on work placements so far this year. These have ranged from within-school IT support, Franklin Vets, St Andrews Op Shop, TK Fitness Center, Huntly Countdown, Wattle Contracting, Te Hoe Home Kill, Hylex Ltd, Kainga Ora at the Scott Road Development, Genesis Energy at the Huntly Power site, and Waikato Aviation at the Hamilton Airport.
The Gateway placements offer our students a fantastic opportunity to explore not only where their interests and passion lie, but also experience what their pathway for the future could look like. We would like to thank all the local businesses that have supported us to allow the students into their places of work. We are always looking for new opportunities for our students, so if you think you would like to, and could offer our young students an insight into the world of work, please feel free to contact us at the Careers office.
We have also taken the opportunity to sign students up for Star Taster courses at Wintec. These are specifically targeted toward Year 11 to 13 students. This opportunity allows them to go through to Wintec and become a ‘student for the day’, where they are given information on the course that they are interested in and where it could lead.
We have continued with supporting students to gain their driver’s licenses and to date, we have paid for 13 students to gain either their learner or restricted licenses.
It is at this time of year that we are starting to target Year 11, 12, and 13 students around their assessment progress, attendance, and courses for next year. Students and whaanau can email jo.kelly@tkcoll.school.nz or drop into the careers office (C10) with any questions they may have.
