Perry Outdoor Education Trust (POET) and Te Kauwhata College

Set up in 2003 and supported by Brian Perry Charitable Trust, POET assists low decile secondary schools to facilitate the delivery of outdoor education experiences for students. POET achieves this by building capability and sustainability in schools through professional development, mentoring of teachers and direct funding.

Te Kauwhata College has been part of the project since 2005 and thanks to POET, over 350 students per year are given the chance to participate in a variety of outdoor activities in various settings. These range from team building challenges whilst camping in a farmer's paddock, to the personal challenges challenges of a five day residential camp in the Hunua Ranges and lots of other opportunities in between.

The professional development and mentoring of the teachers by the POET programme coordinator enables Te Kauwhata College staff to run and actively participate in the activities with the students. This builds relationships outside the formal setting of a classroom, relationships that then help the learning of the students back in the classroom.

As a school we thank POET for their support and look forward to continuing and building on our relationship.
